The Roselle Catholic boys became the first NJ team to win two Penn Relays Championship of America races in the same year.
In the DMR, Bob Hoffman, Bill Klimas, Rich Schaffer and Mike Garvey (4:21.5) combined to win in 10:26.2. The 4x880 lineup consisted of Peter Billia (1:59.0), Jim McCue (1:59.9), Hoffman (1:57.0) and Garvey (1:56.0). | 1971 Scotch Plains Fanwood Captures Penn DMRSPF captured the boys DMR crown in 10:12.4, fourth fastest ever the time. Gary Proto put SPF in front with an opening 880 of 1:55.4. Doug Tompkins followed with 49.7 quarter, Tim Provost, a sophomore ran his ¾ in 3:10.1 handing Vince Cartier a 30‐yard lead. Cartier, who ran a national indoor record 4:06.6 in 1972, split 4:17.2. A few weeks after Penn, a DMR match race was held between SPF & Essex Catholic at the Metuchen Relays.
